image: Ivar Pel (2008)
Jaap Blonk was born in 1953 in Woerden, the Netherlands. He began university study in mathematics and musicology, but did not complete his degree, and is mostly self-taught. In the 1980s he started to develop vocal performances, reciting poetry, improvising and composing for voice. Since 2000 he has also used electronics in his compositions and performances. He has collaborated with many musicians and contemporary music groups; from 1983-1999 he led the jazz group Splinks, and from 1987-2005 the avant-rock band BRAAXTAAL. He has released over 20 albums, the most recent of which are Keynote Dialogues and Deep Fried (with Machinefabriek). He exhibits the scores of his sound poems and compositions as visual artwork.
This is an amazing opportunity to hear one of the world's most distinguished, yet consistently experimental sound poets in the intimate venue of the Claremont Gallery, Aberdeen. Tickets are strictly limited, advance booking strongly recommended.
